Habitat
Grass areas in open forest country. From sea-level - 400 m.

Australia (B) (NB).

Population
Estimated population is 500 (2010) and decreasing.

Status EN
Habitat destruction through grazing, introduction of noxious weeds, and unfavourable fire regimes may be the main threats.

Habits
Usually in pairs or small coveys.

Food
Seeds. Fine gravel is swallowed to aid in digestion.

Voice
Female, a deep, slow booming, beginning softly and increasing in intensity and frequency. Male, A soft, whistling, 'chiew-chiew'.

Nest
An ovate structure with an entrance at the side, composed of soft blades of fine dry grass, placed in a shallow depression in the ground.

Eggs (Guide)
3 - 4; glossy, white, finely speckled and blotched all over with light brown, grey-brown and black; round to pyriform; about 27 x 23 mm. Incubation: probably 15 days; by male.

Young
Precocial, nidifugous.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Chestnut-backed Buttonquail (Turnix castanotus) and Painted Buttonquail (Turnix varius) and sometimes considered conspecific with Chestnut-backed Buttonquail (Turnix castanotus), but differs in bill size and plainer plumage. Specific name sometimes misspelt olivei, but original spelling is olivii.

Proposed subspecies coenensis (from north of range) no longer recognized, because based on individual variation.

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Painted Buttonquail (Turnix varius) which is very heavily marked above.
