Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with White-tailed Blue-Flycatcher (Elminia albicauda). The two have been placed in a genus Errannornis, but differences considered insufficient to merit generic separation.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • longicauda (Swainson, 1838)   -  Senegal and Gambia eastern discontinuously to southern Mali, southern Burkina Faso and Nigeria.
  • teresita Antinori, 1864   -  Cameroon south to northern Angola and east through DRCongo to southern Sudan, Uganda, western Kenya and extreme north-western Tanzania.
