Habitat
Inland wetlands, including rivers, streams, creeks. Also, larger freshwater lakes, estuaries and mangroves.

Range (Guide)

Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso (B) (NB), Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Equatorial Guinea (B) (NB), Gabon, Mali, Niger, Nigeria.

Vagrant to Ghana, Togo.

Large rivers and coasts: Mali and Niger to Ghana, Cameroon, western Zaire and north-western Angola.

Population
Estimated population is 11,000 - 35,000 (2010).

Status LC
Habitat destruction (building of dams) and human disturbance are the main threats.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Little Pratincole (Glareola lactea). Birds from upper R Niger, with more cinnamon on nape and breast, may merit separation as subspecies colorata.
