Habitat
Mainly rainforests, riparian forests, mangroves and other dense tropical habitats with fruiting trees.

Range (Guide)
Australia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Habits
Usually singly or in twos, but sometimes in small flocks when foraging. Often seen associating with Australasian Figbird (Sphecotheres vieilloti), Metallic Starling (Aplonis metallica) and Olive-backed Oriole (Oriolus sagittatus).

Food
Mainly fruit, also insects.

Voice
A loud, bubbling call of three or four notes. A 'yok-yok-yol'. Also a clear, 'pee-kweek'. A harsh 'scarab' is uttered in aggression. Also soft warblings.

Nest
Cup-shaped, compact, composed of strips of soft bark and vine-tendrils, lined with twigs and rootlets, usually placed in the outer branches of a tall tree, up to 20 m above the ground.

Eggs (Guide)
Clutch Size: 2 - 3
Color: light cream to pale brown, variably blotched with dark brown and grey
Dimensions: 34 x 23 mm (oblong-oval)
Incubation: mainly by female

Young
Altricial, nidicolous.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Brown Oriole (Oriolus szalayi), Halmahera Oriole (Oriolus phaeochromus), Seram Oriole (Oriolus forsteni), Buru Oriole (Oriolus bouroensis), Timor Oriole (Oriolus melanotis) and Olive-backed Oriole (Oriolus sagittatus).

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • migrator Hartert, 1904   -  Roma, Leti and Moa, in eastern Lesser Sundas.
  • muelleri (Bonaparte, 1850)   -  Aru Is and south-central New Guinea.
  • flavocinctus (Vigors, 1826)   -  Northern western Australia (Kimberley) and northern Territory (Arnhem Land and Groote Eylandt).
  • tiwi Schodde & Mason, IJ, 1999   -  Bathurst I and Melville I (off north-western northern Territory).
  • flavotinctus Schodde & Mason, IJ, 1999   -  North-eastern Australia (Cape York Peninsula, in northern Queensland).
  • kingi Mathews, 1912   -  Coastal zone of north-eastern Queensland from Trinity Bay south to Halifax Bay.
