First Described (Guide)
(Souancé, 1856)

Habitat
Montane forest to arid lowland forest, palm-savannah and open woodland. Also agricultural land and second growth. From sea-level - 3,000 m.

Range (Guide)
Dominican Republic (B), Haiti (B), Puerto Rico (E).

Introduced to Guadeloupe.

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat loss and persecution as a crop-pest, trapping for the cage-bird trade are the main threats.

Voice
Screeching calls in flight and when perched. Call of Jamaican Parakeet (Eupsittula nana) is higher-pitched.

Subspecies
Extremely close in appearance and size to White-eyed Parakeet (Psittacara leucophthalmus), and arguably conspecific, although possibly better regarded as a member of an enlarged White-eyed Parakeet (Psittacara leucophthalmus) superspecies. May form a superspecies with Cuban Parakeet (Psittacara euops). Subspecies maugei of Mona I (off Puerto Rico) extinct.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • chloroptera (Souancé, 1856)   -  Hispaniola.
  • maugei ! (Souancé, 1856)   -  Mona I (off Puerto Rico). Extinct.


Similar Species
Introduced Jamaican Parakeet (Eupsittula nana) which is smaller, duller green and lacks any red.
