Subspecies
Subspecies septemstriata sometimes thought to be a hybrid between nominate and goslingi.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
goslingi Smith, 1836 - Mauritania and Senegal east to Cameroon, north-eastern DRCongo and south-western Sudan. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Grey-throated Bunting (Emberiza goslingi).
septemstriata Rüppell, 1837 - Eastern Sudan and northern and central Ethiopia east to Eritrea and north-western Somalia.
arabica (Lorenz von Liburnau, L & Hellmayr, 1902) - Southern Arabia.
insularis (Ogilvie-Grant and H. O. Forbes, 1899) - Socotra I.
tahapisi Smith, 1836 - Southern Ethiopia south through eastern Africa to south-eastern South Africa. Also locally in Angola, and southern Gabon east to southern DRCongo.
nivenorum (Winterbottom, 1965) - Southern Angola south to central Namibia.
