Subspecies
Differences between nominate subspecies and larger-billed crassirostris possibly due to clinal variation, and latter perhaps better subsumed in nominate.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
nigrifrons (Hartlaub, 1855) - Southern Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, southern Ivory Coast, southern Ghana and Togo.
malimbicus (Daudin, 1802) - Southern Nigeria, southern Cameroon, south-western Central African Republic, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, PRCongo, western DRCongo (around mouth of R Congo) and north-western Angola (Cabinda and Cuanza Norte).
crassirostris E. J. O. Hartert, 1919 - South-eastern Central African Republic, north, western and eastern DRCongo, and western and south-western Uganda.
