Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Red-faced Crombec (Sylvietta whytii) and Philippa's Crombec (Sylvietta philippae). Subspecies carnapi intergrades with nominate in Sudan.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
brachyura Lafresnaye, 1839 - Southern Mauritania south to northern Sierra Leone, thence east through southern Mali and northern Ivory Coast to southern Niger, Nigeria, northern Cameroon, northern Central African Republic, southern and central Chad, central and north-eastern Sudan and northern Eritrea; reaches Guinea coast in eastern Ghana, Togo and Benin.
carnapi Reichenow, 1900 - Central Cameroon and Central African Republic (except north), southern Sudan, northern DRCongo (upper Uele), Uganda and western Kenya (TransNzoia, central Nyanza).
leucopsis Reichenow, 1879 - Ethiopia, extreme south-eastern Sudan, Djibouti, northern and southern Somalia, Kenya (north, east and south of highlands) and north-eastern Tanzania (south to Kilimanjaro and Usambaras). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Eastern Crombec (Sylvietta leucopsis).
