Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Three-streaked Tchagra (Tchagra jamesi) and Southern Tchagra (Tchagra tchagra). Has hybridized with Three-streaked Tchagra (Tchagra jamesi). Additional named subspecies are littoralis (described from Changamwe, in Kenya) and congener (Neu-Helgoland, Songea, southern Tanzania), both synonymized with minor, and frater (Bangwa Mts, western Cameroon), subsumed in emini.
The following 9 subspecies are recognised:
ussheri (Sharpe, 1882) - Sierra Leone east to south-western and southern Nigeria.
emini (Reichenow, 1893) - South-eastern Nigeria south to lower R Congo, east to northern and eastern DRCongo, southern Sudan, Uganda, western and central Kenya, Rwanda and north-western Tanzania.
souzae (Barboza du Bocage, 1892) - South-western PRCongo south to central Angolan plateau (south to northern Huíla), east to southern DRCongo (to upper Katanga) and northern Zambia (near Ndola).
ansorgei (Neumann, 1909) - Western Angola (southern Cuanza Norte and Luanda southern along coast and escarpment to central and southern Huíla and eastern Namibe).
bocagei da Rosa Pinto, 1968 - South-eastern Angola (central Cuando Cubango).
minor (Reichenow, 1887) - South-eastern Kenya, Tanzania (except north-west), Zambia (except Ndola and extreme south-west), Malawi, northern Zimbabwe and northern and central Mozambique (south to R Save).
rhodesiensis (Roberts, 1932) - South-eastern Angola (Cuando Cubango), north-eastern Namibia (along R Okavango east to Caprivi) and north-western Botswana.
damarensis (Reichenow, 1915) - Extreme south-western Angola, Namibia (except north-east), Botswana (except north-west), south-western Zimbabwe (western and north-western Matabeleland) and northern South Africa (south to northern Northern Cape and western Free State).
australis (Smith, 1836) - South-eastern Zimbabwe (in Sabi valley and south-eastern lowveld), north-eastern South Africa (south to northern KwaZulu-Natal), southern Mozambique (Sul do Save) and eastern Swaziland.
