Subspecies
Recent DNA studies indicate that closest relative is Shining Drongo (Dicrurus atripennis). Distinctive subspecies sharpei may merit treatment as a separate species.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
sharpei (Smith, 1834) - Southern Senegal east to Nigeria, Cameroon, Central African Republic, southern Sudan, Uganda and western Kenya, extending south to northern Angola and northern DRCongo.
muenzneri Reichenow, 1915 - Southern Somalia, eastern and south-eastern Kenya, and eastern and southern Tanzania.
saturnus Clancey, 1976 - Angola (western escarpment east to Moxico), south-eastern DRCongo (Katanga) and Zambia.
tephrogaster Clancey, 1975 - Southern Malawi, eastern Zimbabwe, and Mozambique (north of R Limpopo).
ludwigii (Smith, 1834) - Eastern South Africa, Swaziland and southern Mozambique.
