North-eastern Atlantic, from southern Iceland and western Norway south through northern and western Britain to north-western France, northern Spain, Salvage and Canary Is; also in Mediterranean, from eastern Spain east to Greece and (?) Turkey.

Estimated population is 1,300,000 - 1,500,000 (2010).

1; white with faint brown spots. Incubation: about 44 days; by both sexes.
Subspecies
Mediterranean population might form distinct subspecies (melitensis).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
pelagicus (Linnaeus, 1758) - Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean; ranges to Indian Ocean.
melitensis (Schembri, 1843) - Breeds Mediterranean; winter range unknown, possibly to Indian Ocean.
