Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Laggar Falcon (Falco jugger), and possibly with Saker Falcon (Falco cherrug), Gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus) and Prairie Falcon (Falco mexicanus).
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
- feldeggii Schlegel, 1843 - Southern Italy and Sicily east to Armenia and Azerbaijan, then south to Lebanon.
- erlangeri Kleinschmidt, O, 1901 - North-western Africa, from Mauritania to Morocco and Tunisia.
- tanypterus Schlegel, 1843 - North-eastern Africa, including Egypt and northern Sudan, to Arabia, Israel and Iraq.
- abyssinicus Neumann, 1904 - Senegal and Ghana east to Ethiopia and Somalia, and south to Uganda and northern Zaire.
- biarmicus Temminck, 1825 - Angola, southern Zaire and Kenya south to South Africa.
