Subspecies
Genus sometimes merged with Ceratogymna. Subspecies sharpii intergrades with nominate along R Niger, and with duboisi in eastern Cameroon.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
fistulator (Cassin, 1852) - Senegal east to western Nigeria (east to R Niger).
sharpii (Elliot, DG, 1873) - R Niger east to southern Chad, south to north-western Angola and western Zaire. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Eastern Piping Hornbill (Bycanistes sharpii).
duboisi Sclater, WL, 1922 - Central African Republic and Congo Basin east to southern Sudan and western Uganda, south to south-central and eastern Zaire.
