Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Pale-billed Hornbill (Lophoceros pallidirostris). Larger, darker birds from north-eastern Ethiopia and south-western Arabia described as subspecies forskalii, and paler ones from southern Angola and Namibia as dorsalis, but neither now seems distinct enough to warrant recognition.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
nasutus (Linnaeus, 1766) - Southern Mauritania east to Ethiopia and western Somalia, south to northern Sierra Leone, northern Uganda and northern Kenya; south-western Saudi Arabia and western Yemen.
epirhinus (Sundevall, 1850) - Southern Uganda and southern Kenya south to central Namibia and northern South Africa.
