Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Nubian Woodpecker (Campethera nubica), Bennett's Woodpecker (Campethera bennettii) and Reichenow's Woodpecker (Campethera scriptoricauda), and all sometimes considered conspecific. Subspecies intergrade in Sudan and north-eastern Zaire. Described subspecies batesi (northern Cameroon) synonymized with nominate.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
punctuligera (Wagler, 1827) - South-western Mauritania (c. 60 km north of Rosso) and Senegambia east to south-western Sudan and south to central Ivory Coast (Lamto), Ghana (Mole), southern Nigeria (Abeokuta), central Cameroon (Mt Zoro and Mbakaou) and north-eastern Zaire (upper Uele Valley).
