Subspecies
Likely that genus belongs within tanager family (Thraupidae), but molecular data needed to support this assertion. Some morphological and plumage features suggest relationship with Rowettia. Subspecies well differentiated, geographically isolated from each other, and perhaps better treated as two separate species. Further research is required.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
princetoniana (Scott, 1900) - Southern Chile (Magallanes) and southern Argentina (Santa Cruz and Tierra del Fuego).
