Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist montane forest. From 1,800 - 2,800 m, occasionally 1,500 - 3,350 m.
Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Molecular-genetic studies place present species within Buthraupis, most closely related to Black-chested Mountain-tanager (Cnemathraupis eximia) and Golden-backed Mountain-tanager (Cnemathraupis aureodorsalis).
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
- riefferii (Boissonneau, 1840) - Andes of Colombia and Ecuador.
- dilutus Zimmer, JT, 1947 - Andes of northern Peru south of Chachapoyas.
- elegans (Tschudi, 1844) - Andes of central Peru (Junín).
- celatus Zimmer, JT, 1947 - Andes of southern Peru below Limbani.
- bolivianus (von Berlepsch, 1912) - Andes of Bolivia (La Paz).
