Subspecies
Closely related to Grey-tailed Piha (Snowornis subalaris). Both formerly placed in genus Lipaugus, but morphological study and recent analysis of DNA sequences indicate only remote relationship to that genus. Previously suggested placement in genus Lathria, but that name unavailable.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
mindoensis (Hellmayr & Seilern, 1914) - Western Andes of Colombia (southern from Antioquia) and north-western Ecuador (Pichincha).
cryptolophus (Sclater & Salvin, 1877) - Eastern Andes of Colombia (southern from head of Magdalena Valley) and Ecuador, and eastern and central Andean slopes of Peru (south to Huánuco).
