Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Yellow-browed Toucanet (Aulacorhynchus huallagae ) and Blue-banded Toucanet (Aulacorhynchus coeruleicinctis ).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
haematopygus (Gould, 1835) - Andean slopes from western Venezuela (Perijá Mts) and northern and central Colombia south to south-western Colombia; possibly also eastern slope in northern Ecuador.
sexnotatus Gould, 1868 - Extreme south-western Colombia and southern in western Ecuador.
