Coastal ranges and foothills of Rocky Mts from southern British Columbia south to Arizona and New Mexico, east to South Dakota, Wyoming and south-eastern Colorado; in winter mostly in southern parts of range.

Estimated population is 130,000 (2010).
Voice
Generally silent. Calls include a series of short, harsh 'churr' notes and clicking, squeaky 'yick' notes. Infrequent, weak drum rolls followed by a few taps.

A cavity excavated in a dead tree branch.

5 - 9; white. Incubation: about 12 days; by both sexes.
Young
Fledge in 28 - 35 days.
Subspecies
Rather distinctive. Sometimes placed in monotypic genus Asyndesmus, but shows many similarities to typical Melanerpes.
