Subspecies
Savannah Sparrow (Passerculus sandwichensis) and Large-billed Sparrow (Passerculus rostratus) (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) have been lumped into Passerculus sandwichensis following AOU (1998), which also includes beldingi, contra Stotz et al. (1996) who treat sandwichensis, rostratus and beldingi as separate species in the genus Ammodramus.
Genus sometimes subsumed in Ammodramus. Traditionally treated as conspecific with Savannah Sparrow (Passerculus sandwichensis) and Large-billed Sparrow (Passerculus rostratus), and often also with San Benito Sparrow (Passerculus sanctorum), but all differ in morphology and plumage and, to some extent, in ecology and separation at species level supported by recent molecular-genetic findings.
Two additional proposed subspecies from Baja California: annulus, described from Scammon's Lagoon (Guerrero Negro), is treated as a synonym of beldingi, and magdalenae, from North Estero (in Bahía Magdalenae), is synonymized with nominate.
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Savannah Sparrow (Passerculus sandwichensis).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- beldingi Ridgway, 1885 - Breeds extreme south-western USA (coastal southern California southern from Santa Barbara, possibly from San Luis Obispo County) southern in north-western Mexico (Baja California), including Todos Santos I, to Laguna de Ojo Liebre. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Savannah Sparrow (Passerculus sandwichensis).
- guttatus Lawrence, 1867 - Breeds in southern Baja California from Laguna San Ignacio south to Bahía Magdalena. Non-breeding south to Cabo San Lucas. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Savannah Sparrow (Passerculus sandwichensis).
