Subspecies
Suggested sister-species relationship with Narrow-billed Woodcreeper (Lepidocolaptes angustirostris) seems unlikely on basis of biogeography.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
umbrosus Moore, RT, 1934 - North-western Mexico from eastern and south-eastern Sonora and south-western Chihuahua south to Durango, Nayarit and northern Jalisco.
leucogaster (Swainson, 1827) - Western and southern Mexico on Pacific slope and interior (from Jalisco, western Zacatecas and San Luis Potosí, south to southern Oaxaca) and on Atlantic slope (from west-central Veracruz south to south-eastern Oaxaca).
