Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Olive-backed Foliage-gleaner (Automolus infuscatus), as suggested by voice, plumage pattern and biogeography. Subspecies lammi more similar vocally to subspecies paraensis of that species than to other subspecies of present species. Subspecies sulphurascens varies clinally, with populations in more humid areas darker and those in drier interior paler. Proposed subspecies bangsi, from Bahia (Brazil), regarded as a synonym of nominate, following initial confusion over type locality of latter.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
lammi (Wied, 1821) - Eastern Brazil (Paraíba, Pernambuco). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Pernambuco Foliage-gleaner (Automolus lammi).
leucophthalmus (Wied, 1821) - Eastern Brazil (eastern Bahia).
sulphurascens (Lichtenstein, MHK, 1823) - South-central and south-eastern Brazil (eastern Mato Grosso, southern Goiás and southern Bahia south to Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones).
