Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Rufous-backed Treehunter (Thripadectes scrutator), and suggested by some authors as being possibly conspecific.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
bricenoi von Berlepsch, 1907 - Andes of western Venezuela (Mérida).
flammulatus (Eyton, 1849) - Santa Marta Mts (north-eastern Colombia) and Andes of south-western Venezuela (Táchira), Colombia (western Andes from Antioquia south to Cauca, central range, eastern range from Norte de Santander south to Cundinamarca), Ecuador (but on western slope southern only locally to Azuay) and extreme northern Peru (Piura, Cajamarca).
