Habitat
Lower growth of montane and lowland evergreen forest, From 100 - 1,600 m.

Range (Guide)
Argentina (B), Brazil (B), Paraguay (B).

South-eastern Brazil (southern Espirito Santo south to Santa Catarina, also central Rio Grande do Sul) and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones); also several sight records from south-eastern Paraguay (Canendiyú, Alto Paraná, Caazapá).
 
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Habitat destruction and degradation due to urbanisation, industrialisation, agricultural expansion, colonisation and associated road-building, are the main threats.

Voice
A stuttering chatter followed by 3-4 loud shrieks.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Genus sometimes merged into a broadly defined Philydor. This species suspected by some authors as being not particularly closely related to either Scaly-throated Foliage-gleaner (Anabacerthia variegaticeps) or Montane Foliage-gleaner (Anabacerthia striaticollis).

Similar Species
Buff-browed Foliage-gleaner (Syndactyla rufosuperciliata) is more uniform olive brown above, supercilium is narrower and buff not creamy and its ear coverts are less contrasting. Large Pale-browed Treehunter (Cichlocolaptes leucophrus) is larger, streaked on the crown and mantle and more sharply streaked below. Sharp-billed Treehunter (Heliobletus contaminatus) is smaller, streaked on the mantle and has a buffy supercilium and throat.
