Habitat
Canopy and subcanopy of cabruca (extensive shade cocoa plantations, with native canopy species) within moist lowland forest. From sea-level - 550 m.

Brazil (B).

South-eastern Bahia, in eastern Brazil.

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat destruction and degradation is the main threat.

Voice
High-pitched song begins with sparse notes, accelerating and finishing in a long trill.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

No obvious close relatives. Plumage, nest architecture and placement, and voice suggest relationship to Xenerpestes. Morphology, nest architecture and voice also suggest possible link to Metopothrix or Margarornis. Song and nest structure suggest possible link to some Asthenes or Cranioleuca. The only furnariid with juvenile plumage radically different from adult.
