Breeds central Chile (Santiago south to Valdivia), northern and eastern Argentina (south to Chubut and Buenos Aires), Uruguay and south-eastern Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul); in non-breeding season north to Paraguay.

Subspecies
Pseudocolopteryx flaviventris (Sibley and Monroe 1990, 1993) has been split into Pseudocolopteryx flaviventris and Pseudocolopteryx citreola following SACC (2010).
Chilean birds may be slightly larger in size than those elsewhere in range. Further study is needed.
