Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Livingstone's Turaco (Tauraco livingstonii), Schalow's Turaco (Tauraco schalowi), Guinea Turaco (Tauraco persa), Black-billed Turaco (Tauraco schuettii) and Fischer's Turaco (Tauraco fischeri), a complex of allopatric forms formerly treated variably either as a single polytypic species or as three, five or six species. Formerly considered conspecific with Livingstone's Turaco (Tauraco livingstonii) and Schalow's Turaco (Tauraco schalowi), but differences in vocalizations and chromosome-banding analysis suggest otherwise.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
phoebus Neumann, 1907 - Eastern and northern Transvaal and north-western Swaziland.
corythaix (Wagler, 1827) - Natal, western Zululand and southern Swaziland to southern and eastern Cape Province.
