Subspecies
Additional subspecies proposed for some of islands off western Sumatra (stresemanni) and for some of Philippines (nakamurai), but both now considered invalid.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
comata (Temminck, 1824) - Southern Myanmar (southern Tenasserim) and peninsular Thailand south to Sumatra (including western Sumatran islands) and Borneo and intervening islands.
major (Hartert, 1895) - Philippines, including Sulu Archipelago, but excluding Palawan.
