Habitat
Slow-flowing rivers in lowland forest, sometimes in patchy degraded forest and logged forest. From sea-level - 300 m.

Range (Guide)

Papua New Guinea (B) (NB).

New Britain, New Ireland and the nearby islands of Umboi, New Hanover and Lihir in Papua New Guinea (B).

Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat destruction due to logging and clearance are the main threats.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Shining Blue Kingfisher (Alcedo quadribrachys) and Azure Kingfisher (Ceyx azureus), and perhaps also Blue-eared Kingfisher (Alcedo meninting).

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) which is greener above, more orange below and lacks the slight collar, Moluccan Dwarf-Kingfisher (Ceyx lepidus) which is more purple above, brighter orange below and often with red on the bill, Little Kingfisher (Ceyx pusillus) which is purple-blue above and very small.
