Subspecies
In USA, described subspecies cineraceus (from California) and arizonensis (from Arizona) considered not properly separable from eastern populations, and therefore synonymized with nominate.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
grinnelli Palmer, W, 1897 - Breeds Alaska, south-western Canada (British Columbia) and north-western USA. Non-breeding mainly western and southern USA.
calendula (Linnaeus, 1766) - Breeds central and eastern Canada and WC, south-western and north-eastern USA. Non-breeding central and southern USA south to northern Central America.
obscurus Ridgway, 1876 - Guadalupe I, off Baja California (Mexico).
