Habitat
In breeding season, generally unihabited islands among rocky cracks and burrows. In non-breeding season, pelagic, often in flocks, dispersing from breeding areas as the sea freezes.
Japan, Russia (Asian), USA (B).
Vagrant to Canada, Mexico.
Population
Estimated population is 8,200,000 (2010).

Voice
At colonies a mix of hoots, honks and barks, including a nasal 'kyow'. Generally silent at sea.
