Habitat
Subtropical and tropical high altitude shrubland, subtropical and tropical moist montane forest. From 2,500 - 3,500 m, occasionally up to 4,000 m.

Peru (B).

Andes of southern Peru (eastern Apur��mac and adjacent Cuzco).

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Voice
Faint 'tzi' calls. Song is a variation of four different notes repeated in different themes.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Until recently usually treated as conspecific with Rufous-eared Brush-finch (Atlapetes rufigenis).

Similar Species
Allopatric with all similar forms: Slaty Brush-finch (Atlapetes schistaceus) is only rufous on crown; Black-spectacled Brush-finch (Atlapetes melanopsis) is generally duller with more buffy head; and Rufous-eared Brush-finch (Atlapetes rufigenis) has no black around eye.
