Habitat
Montane pine, pine-oak and pine-evergreen forests, in the upper and middle storeys of forest, particularly along watercourses in canyons. From 1,800 - 3,000 m.
Mexico (B) (NB), USA (B) (NB).
South-central USA (southern Arizona) and western Mexico (Sierra Madre Occidental).
 
Population
Estimated population is 20,000 - 49,999 (2010).
Status LC
Habitat destruction through deforestation may be the main threat.

Voice
Call is a long, upslurred squeal, ending in a 'chuck' note. Also a loud, hard cackling 'ka-kak', sometimes uttered in flight. Song is a long, quavering series of whistled notes that increase in volume.
