Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. From sea-level - 1,400 m, occasionally to 1,800 m.
Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Orinoco Piculet (Picumnus pumilus ) and sometimes considered conspecific, but their ranges overlap slightly in south-eastern Colombia apparently without interbreeding.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
lafresnayi Malherbe, 1862 - South-eastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador and northern Peru.
pusillus Pinto, 1936 - North-central Brazil on middle R Amazon east to R Negro.
taczanowskii Domaniewski, 1925 - North-eastern and north-central Peru (south to Huánuco).
punctifrons Taczanowski, 1886 - Eastern Peru.
