Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest, temperate forest. From sea-level - 2,900 m.

Range (Guide)

Canada, Guatemala, Mexico, USA (B).

Rocky Mountains from south-eastern British Columbia and south-western and south-eastern Alberta east to western South Dakota, and south, discontinuously, to south-eastern California, eastern Arizona and north-eastern and southern New Mexico. Winters from southern California, Arizona and western Texas south to south-central Mexico.

Estimated population is 2,200,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius) and Red-breasted Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus ruber) and sometimes treated as conspecific with Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius), and in past also with Red-breasted Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus ruber). Hybridizes occasionally with Yellow-bellied Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus varius) in south-western Canada (Alberta), more frequently with Red-breasted Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus ruber) in various areas. Has interbred rarely with Williamson's Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus thyroideus).

No subspecies.
