Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland forest, subtropical and tropical dry shrubland, dry savanna. From sea-level - 1,800 m, occasionally up to 2,500 m.
Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Venezuela.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Green-capped Tanager (Tangara meyerdeschauenseei), Grenada Tanager (Tangara cucullata), Black-backed Tanager (Tangara peruviana), Chestnut-backed Tanager (Tangara preciosa) and Scrub Tanager (Tangara vitriolina). An aviary specimen, originally described as Tangara arnaulti, is now believed to be a hybrid with Chestnut-backed Tanager (Tangara preciosa). Subspecies form two markedly different populations, in north of range nominate and fulvescens ("cayana group"), which are predominantly buff below, and mainly south of R Amazon in eastern Brazil flava, sincipitalis, margaritae and chloroptera ("flava group"), which are predominantly black below. It has been suggested that the two may represent separate species, but they appear to be united by poorly known intermediate subspecies huberi, from Marajó I (at mouth of Amazon).
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
- fulvescens Todd, 1922 - Colombia on both slopes of eastern Andes at northern end (southern from Norte de Santander).
- cayana (Linnaeus, 1766) - Eastern Colombia (south to Meta and Vaupés) and Venezuela (south to Cerro Yapacana, in central Amazonas, and Bolívar), locally through the Guianas to coastal north-central Brazil (Amapá); isolated populations in north-eastern Peru, south-eastern Peru and adjacent northern Bolivia, and central Brazil (R Madeira; R Negro).
- huberi (Hellmayr, 1910) - Marajó I (north-eastern Pará), in northern Brazil.
- flava (Gmelin, JF, 1789) - North-eastern Brazil (east-central Pará; central Maranhío and northern Ceará south to northern Goiás and southern Bahia). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Stripe-bellied Tanager (Tangara flava).
- sincipitalis (von Berlepsch, 1907) - Goiás (except north), in east-central Brazil.
- margaritae (Allen, JA, 1891) - Central Brazil (Mato Grosso).
- chloroptera (Vieillot, 1819) - South-eastern Brazil (Minas Gerais, Sío Paulo and Paraná to Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones).
