Subspecies
Possibly closest to Black-cheeked Gnateater (Conopophaga melanops). Subspecies snethlageae distinctive: possibly best treated as a separate species, with pallida as a subspecies or a synonym thereof, representing only one extreme of a clinal range of variation. Some confusing variation within range of australis, as some specimens from R Purús (western Brazil) have appearance approaching that of snethlageae.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • aurita (Gmelin, 1789)   -  Guyana east to French Guiana and south to northern Brazil (Manaus east to Amapá).
  • inexpectata Zimmer, JT, 1931   -  South-eastern Colombia and north-western Brazil, southern and eastern along western bank of R Negro.
  • occidentalis Chubb, C, 1918   -  North-eastern Ecuador and north-eastern Peru (east of R Napo).
  • australis Todd, 1927   -  South of R Amazon from north-eastern Peru (south to Ucayali) to western Brazil (east to R Madeira, south to northern Acre and northern Rondônia); population east of R Madeira in north-western Rondônia provisionally placed here.
  • snethlageae von Berlepsch, 1912   -  Brazil south of R Amazon, from both banks of lower R Tapajós and eastern bank of R Teles Pires east to central Pará; not known to occur in area western towards R Madeira. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Black-breasted Gnateater (Conopophaga snethlageae).
  • pallida Snethlage, E, 1914   -  Central Pará east to western bank of R Tocantins.
