Subspecies
Subspecies form two geographically separate groups, northern and western "varia group" also containing cinereiceps and distincta, and eastern and southern "imperator group". It has been suggested that these might represent two distinct species on basis of vocal differences, but geographical variation in song poorly studied. Racial affiliation of birds from south-eastern Minas Gerais uncertain and are currently included in intercedens, but further study is required.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
cinereiceps Hellmayr, 1903 - Extreme southern Venezuela and immediately adjacent northern Brazil (upper R Negro), and north-eastern Peru (northern bank of R Napo).
varia (Boddaert, 1783) - The Guianas and Brazil north of R Amazon (western from lower R Negro).
distincta Todd, 1927 - Brazil south of R Amazon from R Madeira east to R Tapajós, south to Rondônia and northern Mato Grosso.
intercedens von Berlepsch & Leverkühn, 1890 - Eastern and south-eastern Brazil in Pernambuco, and from southern Bahia south to south-eastern Minas Gerais and probably Espírito Santo.
imperator Lafresnaye, 1842 - Southern Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro south to eastern Paraguay, north-eastern Argentina (Misiones) and northern Rio Grande do Sul.
