Subspecies
Close relationship with Spotted Antbird (Hylophylax naevioides) and Dot-backed Antbird (Hylophylax punctulatus) suggested by morphology, vocalizations and nest architecture. Listed subspecies and distributions tentative, reflecting current knowledge of plumage and vocalizations and possibly represent more than one species. A taxonomic study currently being undertaken. Other described subspecies are consobrinus (southern Venezuela, north-western Brazil) and obscurus (northern Brazil), both considered inseparable from nominate.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • naevius (Gmelin, 1789)   -  Southern Venezuela (southern Bolívar, Amazonas), the Guianas, south-eastern Colombia (southern from Meta and Vaupés), extreme north-eastern Ecuador and northern Peru (north of R Napo), and Brazil north of R Amazon.
  • theresae (Des Murs, 1856)   -  South of R Napo in eastern Ecuador and lowland north-eastern Peru (Loreto), and south-western and south-central Amazonian Brazil (east to R Tapajós, south to southern Amazonas and Rondônia).
  • peruvianus Carriker, 1932   -  Northern Peru foothills (Amazonas, San Martín).
  • inexpectatus Carriker, 1932   -  East-central and south-eastern Peru (Ucayali south to Puno, possibly extending west to base of Andes in Huánuco and Junín), extreme south-western Amazonian Brazil (Acre) and north-western Bolivia (western Pando, La Paz and southern Beni south to extreme south-western Santa Cruz).
