Subspecies
May prove to be a member of an obligate ant-following clade. Birds from north-western Amazonia described as subspecies brevibarba, but appear to intergrade over wide area with peruvianus and considered better merged with latter. Apparent intermediates between that and nominate have been found also in region of upper R Negro (north-western Brazil), although extent of intergradation unclear.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • peruvianus Taczanowski, 1884   -  Extreme western Venezuela (eastern Táchira), Colombia (along entire eastern base of Andes and southern from Caquetá and Guianía), north-western Amazonian Brazil (west of R Negro), eastern Ecuador, and northern and central Peru (north of R Amazon and R Marañón, and along base of Andes south to Ayacucho).
  • albifrons (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  Southern Venezuela (Bolívar, Amazonas), the Guianas and Brazil north of R Amazon (eastern bank of R Negro east to Amapá).
