Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Allpahuayo Antbird (Percnostola arenarum), the two possibly not closely related to other species currently placed in genus. Subspecies appear not to intergrade and are sometimes considered separate species, but field studies in possible contact zones, as well as molecular analyses, required in order to determine extent to which they are isolated and genetically distinct.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • jensoni Capparella, Rosenberg, GH & Cardiff, 1997   -  North-eastern Peru (Quebrada Orán, in Loreto).
  • minor Pelzeln, 1868   -  Eastern Colombia (Guainía south to Caquetá), south-western Venezuela (south-western Amazonas) and north-western Amazonian Brazil (upper drainage and southern bank of middle R Negro, south to northern bank of R Ica). Considered by some authors to be. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Amazonas Antbird (Percnostola minor).
  • subcristata Hellmayr, 1908   -  Lower R Negro east to R Trombetas, in northern Brazil.
  • rufifrons (Gmelin, 1789)   -  Eastern and southern Guyana, Surinam, French Guiana and north-eastern Amazonian Brazil (north-eastern Roraima, and R Trombetas east to Amapá).
