Subspecies
Closely related to Band-tailed Antbird (Hypocnemoides maculicauda), appearing to differ somewhat in vocalizations, but very similar in behaviour and morphology. Molecular analyses and field studies in regions of apparent parapatry needed in order to establish true taxonomic relationships. Birds from Colombia, Venezuela and north-western Brazil described as subspecies occidentalis, but appear to intergrade with nominate and considered better merged with latter pending further analysis.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • melanopogon (Sclater, 1857)   -  North of R Amazon in eastern Colombia (southern from Meta and Vichada), eastern and southern Venezuela (eastern Sucre, eastern Monagas, Bolívar, Amazonas), the Guianas, and Brazil north of R Amazon.
  • minor Gyldenstolpe, 1941   -  South-central Amazonian Brazil (drainages of lower R Purus and R Madeira, and near southern bank of R Amazon between R Tapajós and R Tocantins).
  • occidentalis Zimmer, JT, 1932   -  Colombia, Venezuela and north-western Brazil.
