Subspecies
Relationships uncertain, but appears to be closely related to Long-winged Antwren (Myrmotherula longipennis). The two are often grouped with White-flanked Antwren (Myrmotherula axillaris), Rio de Janeiro Antwren (Myrmotherula fluminensis), Slaty Antwren (Myrmotherula schisticolor), Salvadori's Antwren (Myrmotherula minor), Ihering's Antwren (Myrmotherula iheringi), Plain-winged Antwren (Myrmotherula behni), Ashy Antwren (Myrmotherula grisea), Unicolored Antwren (Myrmotherula unicolor), Alagoas Antwren (Myrmotherula snowi), Rio Suno Antwren (Myrmotherula sunensis) and Band-tailed Antwren (Myrmotherula urosticta) as the "grey antwren assemblage", although this grouping possibly not monophyletic. Pending further study, geographical ranges of subspecies follow those given by previous authors, but some subspecies possibly not diagnosable.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • pallida von Berlepsch & Hartert, 1902   -  South-western Venezuela (western Bolívar, Amazonas), north-western Brazil (Roraima and Amazonas north of R Amazon), eastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador and north-eastern Peru (north of R Amazon and R Marañón).
  • cinereiventris Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1868   -  South-eastern Venezuela (eastern Bolívar), the Guianas and north-eastern Amazonian Brazil (Amapá, northern Pará).
  • menetriesii (D'Orbigny, 1837)   -  East-central and south-eastern Peru (south of R Amazon and R Marañón), south-western Amazonian Brazil (east to R Madeira, south to Acre) and north-western Bolivia (western Pando, La Paz, and along base of Andes to western Santa Cruz).
  • berlepschi Hellmayr, 1903   -  South-central Amazonian Brazil (R Madeira east to R Tapajós and south to Rondônia) and extreme north-central and north-eastern Bolivia.
  • omissa Todd, 1927   -  From R Tapajós east to western Maranhío.
