First Described (Guide)
(Sclater & Salvin, 1881)

Habitat
Interior of humid and wet "terra firme" lowland and foothill forest. From sea-level - 600 m, occasionally up to 1,000 m.

Range (Guide)
Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname, Venezuela.

Eastern Venezuela (Bolí­var east of R Caroní­), the Guianas and north-eastern Amazonian Brazil (east of R Branco and lower R Negro).
 
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Status NT
Habitat destruction through deforestation due to logging, mining, human colonisation and subsistence agriculture, is the main threat.

Voice
A short, evenly paced series of harsh downslurred notes, increasing in intensity and decreasing in pitch. Other brief, harsh vocalisations known.

Subspecies
Genetic, morphological and behavioural analyses indicate that this species is part of a monophyletic group that also includes Checker-throated Antwren (Epinecrophylla fulviventris), White-eyed Antwren (Epinecrophylla leucophthalma), Foothill Antwren (Epinecrophylla spodionota), Western Stipple-throated Antwren (Epinecrophylla haematonota), Yasuni Antwren (Epinecrophylla fjeldsaai), Western Ornate Antwren (Epinecrophylla ornata) and Rufous-tailed Antwren (Epinecrophylla erythrura) (the "stipple-throated antwren assemblage"), and which may not be closely related to other species placed in the genus.

No subspecies.
