Birds from eastern Colombia sometimes separated as subspecies flammiceps, but considered indistinguishable from berlepschi.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • erythrocephala (Linnaeus, 1758)   -  Eastern Panama, north-west, north-central and north-eastern Colombia, Venezuela, Trinidad, the Guianas, and northern Brazil (north of middle and lower Amazon).
  • berlepschi (Ridgway, 1906)   -  Southern and eastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, north-central and north-eastern Peru, and north-western Brazil (north of upper Amazon).
  • flammiceps Todd, 1919   -  Eastern Colombia (Santander).
