Entire Amazon-Orinoco Basin, including south-eastern Colombia, southern and eastern Venezuela (north to south-eastern Sucre), the Guianas, eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru, northern Bolivia, and Amazonian Brazil; isolated population in south-eastern Bahia and northern Espírito Santo, in coastal eastern Brazil.

Genus often placed in Cotingidae, and possibly better treated in that family. Scientific name has often been misspelled as "hypopyrrha". Forms a superspecies with Speckled Mourner (Laniocera rufescens).
