Subtropical and tropical moist lowland and swamp forest. From sea-level - 1,000 m.

Range (Guide)
Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, Venezuela.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Relationships within genus uncertain, pending completion of major genetic study. Geographical boundaries of subspecies poorly differentiated. Subspecies klagesi possibly not a valid taxon, sometimes merged with sclateri. Further study is required.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • klagesi (Ridgway, 1906)   -  Central and eastern Venezuela (northern Amazonas, Bolí­var, Delta Amacuro).
  • poliocephalus (Taczanowski, 1884)   -  South-western Venezuela (southern Amazonas), eastern and south-eastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru, and western Brazil (western Amazonas east to right bank of lower R Negro and Tefé).
  • sclateri (Hellmayr, 1903)   -  The Guianas through eastern Amazonian Brazil to northern and central Bolivia. Also isolated population in coastal eastern Brazil (Pernambuco south to Espí­rito Santo).
