Habitat
Freshwater inland wetlands. From sea-level - 1,700 m.
Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela.
Guatemala and Belize south through Panama to Colombia and northern Ecuador; Venezuela and the Guianas south through Amazonian Brazil and west to eastern Peru and northern Bolivia; extreme south-eastern Brazil; also southern Paraguay (Villa Hayes), where status uncertain.
