Habitat
Subtropical and tropical swamp forest, rivers, streams. From sea-level - 1,830 m.
Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Suriname, Venezuela.
Population
Estimated population is 500,000 - 4,999,999 (2010).

Precocial.
Subspecies
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- helias (Pallas, 1781) - Colombia, Venezuela and the Guianas south through Amazonia to eastern Bolivia and central Brazil.
- major Hartlaub, 1844 - Guatemala to western Ecuador. Possibly also southern Mexico.
- meridionalis von Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1902 - South-central Peru (Junín and Cuzco).
